Short Desc. A tuition free school for students with learning disabilities. Serving 3rd- 10th grade students with IEPs.

Education Publication Topic Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
Long Description Founded in 1999 in Hillsborough County Pepin academies provides a therapeutic learning environment that caters to the needs of each individual students with learning disabilities. Over 100 have already enrolled their children at the Pasco school, with 200 more spots available. The first Pepin Academies school opened in 1999 as a Hillsborough County charter school that served students with disabilities who had failed in a traditional school setting. Founder Crisha Scolaro wanted a place for her son, who has Asperger syndrome, to get both an education and the resources he needed to be successful. “He never would have succeeded in a regular school setting, anxiety-wise,” she said. “This is a full-time support system here.” About 75 percent of Pepin’s students are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Other students have attention deficit disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and other learning-related disabilities. As charter schools, the campuses are public schools that are privately run. The school was named after the family that operates beverage company Pepin Distributing Company, one of its major donors. Tom Pepin, the company’s chief executive officer and president, supported the school from its inception. About 80 percent of Pepin students graduate with a standard diploma, and the school says it has never seen a dropout. Most graduates go on to attend community college, join the military or go through Pepin’s transitional vocational program, which places them in job training in the community. Celeste Kellar, former director of the school’s transitional program, will be principal of the Pasco school.
